2024

Celebrating 18 years of short films from Europe and Asia presented in Washington, D.C.

Pairing Programs: June 10 - 13, 2024

Closing Program: June 14, 2024

EuroAsia Shorts (EAS) returns with a packed week of five in-person screening, discussion, and reception events featuring international short films at Washington, D.C. embassies and cultural centers, available free to the public, June 10 – 14! Join an international cinematic dialogue that is uniquely Washingtonian as we celebrate 18 years of EAS in 2024.

This year, EAS events take place throughout a single week, with five screening events Monday-Friday. The first four evenings—each a pairing blending short films from two or three countries designed as a conversation on this year's central theme, Dignity—will be followed by the traditional closing night on Friday June 14, featuring short films from all nine current partner countries represented by DC-based embassies and cultural organizations. Several events include post-film discussions and complementary receptions.

2024 Theme: Dignity

The theme for EuroAsia Shorts 2024 is Dignity. Wherever we are in life, whatever obstacles we face, the desire to preserve our dignity and the dignity of others is universal. Dignity is as fundamental to our humanity as safety, nourishment, or social connection. And yet, there are times when we choose to sacrifice it, in ways both large and small—for other priorities, for other people, or for causes greater than ourselves. Can we place a value on dignity? Is it a right, a privilege, or merely a matter of perspective? When human dignity is threatened, how far are we willing to go to preserve it? To practice dignity requires more than words, especially in a shrinking world of diverse human values, abilities, cultures, and experiences. Perhaps in our search for answers to these questions we can rediscover our shared humanity.

About the Festival

Now in its 18th year (2024), EuroAsia Shorts (originally the Asian-European Short Film Showcase) remains a collaboration between a small group of Washington, D.C. embassies and cultural centers. Since 2006, the festival has presented more than 350 short films, including many award-winning and aspiring filmmaker shorts making their U.S. debut. Each year an exceptionally broad variety of films and styles are presented, all connected by a single theme to facilitate meaningful, insightful discussion. EuroAsia Shorts offers an international cinematic dialogue that is uniquely Washingtonian.

EAS pairing programs were originally conceived as a format that can foster a cultural dialogue, showcasing about 30 minutes of short films from each of two countries—one Asian and one European—followed by a wide-ranging audience discussion with guest speakers from culture and film. The final closing program features extra-short shorts films from all participating countries and a lively panel discussion, tying together the festival’s broader theme of universality and cross-cultural understanding.

The 2024 festival features films from 9 countries. Check out the links below for more on each partner organization and our many cultural programs beyond EAS.
